Exile Sentences Carried Out for Hamed Rouhinejad and Ahmad Karimi

Philosophy student Hamed Rouhinejad was sent into exile from Evin to Zanjan prison on the night of August 26, 2010. HRANA reported that the ruling was implemented by officials without notification to Hamed Rouhinejad’s family or attorney. He is imprisoned since April 2009. He is accused of membership in an anti-government organization. His initial sentence in the post-election group show trials was death, but his sentence was later reduced to ten years imprisonment and exile to Zanjan.

Although Hamed Rouhinejad suffers from multiple sclerosis he has been denied medical leave, even for a day. A lack of proper medical attention has resulted in partial paralysis of body parts.

Hamed Rouhinejad requires special medical attention by specialists in a hospital facility outside prison. Although Evin prison is equipped with a better medical facility than other prisons in the country, Hamed Rouhinejad’s condition deteriorated each day. He has lost much of his eyesight and one of his hands has become completely paralyzed.

The repeated requests by the Rouhinejad family for a medical leave have gone unanswered. Hamed Rouhinejad’s father has faced insults and humiliation in his meetings with officials regarding this matter.

At the same time as Hamed Rouhinejad’s prison transfer order, Ahmad Karimi, who was detained in ward 350 of Evin prison, was transferred to the courthouse, and at 7:30am on August 27th, he was sent into exile at Gonbad-e Qabus prison (in the province of Golestan) to serve his 15-year sentence without any prior notice given to his family or lawyers.

Following the implementation of Ahmad Karimi’s exile sentence, all his personal possessions were confiscated. He has been quarantined since August 28th. He has no access to facilities and only possesses the clothing he is currently wearing. In a phone call to his family, Ahmad Karimi described prison conditions as extremely unfit and likened it to hell on Earth. Gonbad-e Qabus prison detains drug and murder criminals.
