Shiva Nazar Ahari, an Iranian Human Rights activist and a political prisoner in Evin prison (Tehran) since December 20 2009, is now facing the charge of Moharebeh (enmity against God) because of which she could even be sentenced to death. Shiva’s trial date is set for September 4 and we must act now to help and support her.

“I’m writing you as I’m very concerned about the fate of Shiva Nazar Ahari, a human rights activist and a journalist detained in the Islamic Republic of Iran since december 20 2009.
She’s now facing the charge of Moharebeh (enmity against God). Yet I think she’s detained and put in trial just because of her work as a member of the Committee of Human Rights Reporters.
I would like to remind you that collecting and publicizing information about human rights violations is a right guaranteed under Article 19(2) of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a state party, which includes “the freedom to speak, receive and impart information regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media”.
Shiva Nazar Ahari is just a young lady who deeply loves her country and who spent her best years helping disadvantaged children and defending human rights in Iran. I think that Iran should be proud to have such a daughter who honors the high tradition and history of her country, and should not persecuting and detaining her.
That’s why I ask you to urge the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran (especially the Head of Judiciary, Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani) to drop the charge of Moharebeh against Shiva Nazar Ahari, to release her immediately and unconditionally, and to ensure that, while imprisoned, Shiva Nazar Ahari is granted access to her family and adequate medical care.
