Ashura Detainee Sentenced to Death

On August 4th, there were reports that Farah Vazhan was sentenced to 15 years in prison. However, a reliable source has told RAHANA that she has been sentenced to death.

The anonymous source has told the Human Rights House of Iran that Vazhan’s family has not told her that she was sentenced to death in order to prevent her from worrying.

Judge Salavati from the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court presided over the case and she could still appeal it.

Farah Vazhan has been in detention for 7 months and is currently held in Women’s General Ward of Evin Prison. She was detained at her home 2 days after Ashura on December 29th.

Vazham was charged with participating in the street protests and Moharebeh(waging war against God) by cooperating with the MKO. He had lived abroad for many years and had come back to Iran because of her 19 year old daughter who is undergoing chemotherapy for her cancer.

Following the Ashura protests over the disputed presidential elections, hundreds of people were detained and many received heavy sentences. Article 27 of the Iranian Constitution provides for freedom of assembly, “provided arms are not carried” and the assemblies “are not detrimental to the fundamental principles of Islam”

RAHANA would like to apologize to the readers since Vazhan’s last name was written Vazham in the previous report by mistake.
